Moving a washing machine: transit bolts and more

Moving a washing machine without damage: how to fit the transit bolts, drain the leftover water and connect it properly again.

Wasmachine wordt geladen

A washing machine looks like a sturdy appliance, but things can easily break during transport. The drum hangs on springs and shock absorbers and can swing back and forth with every bump. With transit bolts, an empty machine and a few minutes of preparation, it will arrive in one piece. Here is how to go about it.

Why transit bolts matter so much

Transit bolts lock the drum in place at the back of the machine. Without them, the drum can bang against the casing while you drive. That can damage the springs, shock absorbers or bearings. Sometimes you only notice at the first wash, when the machine starts thumping or leaking.

On a new machine the bolts are at the back and are removed during installation. The installer has often put them in a bag with the manual, or left them in a drawer somewhere. Start looking for them well before moving day.

Lost the bolts?

That happens a lot. You can usually reorder transit bolts from the manufacturer or a parts shop, using the model number. You will find it on a sticker in the door opening or on the back. Order them in good time, as delivery can take a few days. If that is no longer possible, secure the drum as well as you can by filling the space between the drum and the casing with towels or sturdy cardboard, and transport the machine extra carefully.

Getting it ready step by step

  1. Run a final empty wash a day or two before the move, or dry the drum well after your last wash. Then leave the door open so the drum can dry.
  2. Unplug it from the socket.
  3. Turn off the water tap and disconnect the inlet hose. Keep a bucket and a cloth to hand, as some water will still come out.
  4. Disconnect the drain hose and let it empty into the bucket.
  5. Drain the remaining water through the pump filter. It is usually behind a small flap at the bottom right of the front. Put a towel and a shallow tray underneath, as more water can come out than you expect.
  6. Fit the transit bolts at the back. Use the manual if you are not sure exactly where they go.
  7. Tape the hoses and the plug to the machine, so they do not drag or snap off.
  8. Take out the detergent drawer and clean and dry it. You can put it loose in the drum, wrapped in a towel.

Transport: upright and secured

Transport the washing machine upright. Place it against a side of the van and secure it with ratchet straps, so it cannot tip over or slide. A washing machine is heavier than it looks, often between 60 and 90 kilos. So lift it with two people or use a sack truck. Never hold it by the door or the control panel.

If the machine has to go up or down stairs, make sure the stairwell is clear and dry. For narrow stairs or an upper floor, the article on moving into a flat explains what to look out for.

Connecting it in your new home

  1. Place the machine on a flat, solid surface.
  2. Remove the transit bolts. This is the step people forget most often. With the bolts still in, the machine will shake violently on the spin cycle and can be damaged. Keep the bolts with the manual for next time.
  3. Connect the inlet hose to the tap and tighten it firmly, but not too tight.
  4. Hang the drain hose in the drain or connect it to the waste trap.
  5. Level the machine by turning the adjustable feet. That cuts down on vibration and noise.
  6. Turn the tap on and check for leaks.
  7. Run a short, empty wash as a test.

Moving a tumble dryer or dishwasher

A tumble dryer has no transit bolts. Do clean the lint filter and empty the condensation tank. A heat pump dryer contains a cooling circuit: preferably transport it upright and wait a few hours after installing it before you switch it on, or follow what the manual says. Empty a dishwasher, let it drain well and tape the hoses in place.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move a washing machine without transit bolts?

You can, but the risk of damage to the drum and suspension is higher. Preferably order new bolts using the model number. If that is not possible, secure the drum as well as you can and drive carefully.

Can a washing machine be transported lying down?

Upright is better. Lying down, the drum can shift and leftover water can run into the electronics. Check the manual to see what the manufacturer recommends.

How long should I wait before using the washing machine again?

You can usually use a washing machine straight after connecting it. Do remove the transit bolts first and check that everything is connected properly.
