Senior moves: downsizing without stress

Downsizing after years in the same house: how to make choices calmly and help the new home feel familiar quickly.

After years in the same house, your parents, or you yourself, are moving somewhere smaller. A flat, a home for older people or a room in a residential care home. A move like this is about more than boxes: a whole life passes by. A calm approach keeps it manageable.

Start well in advance

A senior move goes better in small steps than in a few hectic weeks. Start a few months in advance if you can. Work room by room, or cupboard by cupboard, and agree on short sessions. Two hours at a time is often enough. Once someone gets tired, they stop making good choices.

Know how much space there is

Ask for a floor plan of the new home, with measurements. Then you can see exactly how much wall space there is for a cabinet and whether the dining table fits. Some people draw the rooms on squared paper and cut out the furniture to scale. It seems like a lot of effort, but it prevents a much-loved cabinet turning out not to fit on moving day.

Based on that, make a list of what is coming along. Everything not on that list will get a different destination later.

Choosing what comes along

This is the hardest part. Belongings hold memories, and that is fine. A few things that help:

  • Start in a space with little emotional value, such as the shed, the loft or the kitchen.
  • For each item, ask: do I use it, and do I have room for it in the new home?
  • Pick a few nice pieces from collections instead of keeping everything.
  • Take photos of things that are going but do have meaning.
  • Let the person who is moving decide. Helping them think is good, taking over is not.

What do you do with the rest?

First offer children and grandchildren what they would like to have. Many older people feel good knowing that a cabinet or dinner service stays in the family. Whatever is left can go to the charity shop, be sold or go as bulky waste. Agree with the family who collects what and by which date, so things do not get left lying around.

Papers and important belongings

Gather the passport, bank cards, insurance policies, medicines and the list of medication in one folder or bag that the person keeps with them. Also make sure the GP, the pharmacy and any home care provider know the new address, and from which date. If someone is moving to another municipality, find out in advance which GP is taking on new patients.

Moving day itself

A moving day is busy and long. Many older people prefer not to be in the old house that day, but with family, and only to arrive at the new home at the end of the afternoon. By then the furniture is already in place and the bed is made.

Furnish the new home as much as possible like the old one. The same chair by the window, the photos in a similar spot, the clock on the wall. That makes the new home feel familiar more quickly.

After the move

Visit regularly in the first few weeks. Help find the supermarket, the bus stop and the nearest pharmacy. And check together whether everything is in a handy place: a frequently used pan does not belong in the top cupboard.

The old house often still has to be handed back empty and clean afterwards. Set aside separate time for that, so it does not have to happen on moving day itself.

Getting help

You do not have to do it all yourself. A removal company can pack, dismantle and reassemble furniture, and clear out the old house. That saves the family a lot of lifting and leaves room for the things that really matter: making choices together and being there for each other.
